New software makes duplicate keys by just looking at their pics

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

UC San Diego computer scientists have written a piece of software that can process pictures of keys from nearly all angles, and calculate the number and depth of cuts on them, which is all one requires to make a duplicate key.

“We built our key duplication software system to show people that their keys are not inherently secret,” said Stefan Savage, the computer science professor from UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering who led the student-run project.

“Perhaps this was once a reasonable assumption, but advances in digital imaging and optics have made it easy to duplicate someone’s keys from a distance without them even noticing,” he added.

Professor Savage made a presentation on the new software called ‘Sneakey’ at ACM’s Conference on Communications and Computer Security (CCS) 2008, one of the premier academic computer security conferences.

In one demonstration of the new software system, the computer scientists took pictures of common residential house keys with a cell phone camera, and fed the image into their software, which then produced the information needed to create identical copies.

In another experiment, they used a five-inch telephoto lens to capture images from the roof of a campus building, and duplicate keys sitting on a cafe table more than 200 feet away.

“This idea should come as little surprise to locksmiths or lock vendors. There are experts who have been able to copy keys by hand from high-resolution photographs for some time. However, we argue that the threat has turned a corner-cheap image sensors have made digital cameras pervasive and basic computer vision techniques can automatically extract a key’s information without requiring any expertise,” said Savage.

So far as the threat of key duplication is concerned, Savage says that companies are actively developing and marketing new locking systems that encode electromagnetic secrets as well as a physical code.

“Many car keys, for example, have RFID immobiliser chips that prevent duplicated keys from turning the car on.” he says.

He suggests that people treat their keys like they treat their credit cards.

“Keep it in your pocket unless you need to use it,” he said.

World’s most powerful microscope turns Canada into nanotech hub

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Canada’s famous McMaster University at Hamilton near here is set to become the world leader in nanotechnology with the installation of the world’s most advanced and powerful electron microscope.

The Titan 80-300 Cubed, installed last summer, has turned the world famous university into a global nanotechnology research.

Built by the world nanotech leader FEI Company in the Netherlands at a cost of $15 million, the Titan can examine at the nano level hundreds of everyday products in order to understand, manipulate and improve their efficiency.

It will be used to help produce more efficient lighting and better solar cells, study proteins and drug-delivery materials to target cancers.

The instrument will also be used to assess atmospheric particulates, and help create lighter and stronger automotive materials, more effective cosmetics, and higher density memory storage for faster electronic and telecommunication devices, a university statement said.

“It (the microscope) is the equivalent of taking the Hubble Telescope and aiming it at the atomic level rather than at stars and galaxies,” Gianluigi Botton, director of the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy at McMaster, said of the world’s most powerful microscope.

“We are certainly the first university in the world with a microscope of such a high calibre,” he said.

“With this microscope we can now easily identify atoms, measure their chemical state and even probe the electrons that bind them together.”

McMaster University vice-president Mo Elbestawi said the power of the microscope has turned the university a global hub for the fast growing field of nanotechnology.

“The addition of the Titan 80-300 Cubed to the Centre’s suite of microscopy instruments that include a Titan cryo-in situ solidifies Ontario’s and Canada’s lead in nanotechnology, and places us among the world’s most advanced materials research institutions,” said Elbestawi.

University dean John Capone said, “This particular instrument will enable many new discoveries in the areas of fundamental biological and physical sciences that will help us to better understand the nature of diseases and the development of new cures.”

Added David Wilkinson, dean of engineering, “The Titan’s ability to probe the structure of solid materials to the atomic level will have an impact on the development and commercialization of new technologies from biomedical devices to water quality monitoring and improved energy storage systems.

“McMaster is committed to applying advanced research tools such as the Titan to the needs of our industrial partners, strengthening their ability to innovate and to compete globally.”

World`s first ‘unbreakable’ quantum encryption unveiled

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Data security worries could soon be an anxiety of the past, courtesy the world’s first computer network protected by unbreakable quantum encryption.

The EU-sponsored project (called SECO-QC) has been successfully demonstrated at a scientific conference in Vienna.

The network connects six locations across Vienna and in the nearby town of St Poelten, using 200 km of standard commercial fibre optic cables.

The kinds of security schemes used on computer networks today are typically based on complex mathematical procedures, which are extremely hard for outsiders to crack, but not impossible given sufficient computing resources or time.

However, quantum systems use the laws of quantum theory, which have been shown to be inherently unbreakable.

Charles Bennett of IBM and Gilles Brassard of Montreal University, who was in Vienna to see the network in action, worked out the basic idea of quantum cryptography 25 years ago.

“All quantum security schemes are based on the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, on the fact that you cannot measure quantum information without disturbing it,” BBC quoted him, as saying.

“Because of that, one can have a communications channel between two users on which it’’s impossible to eavesdrop without creating a disturbance. An eavesdropper would create a mark on it. That was the key idea,” he said further.

The technology works by sending streams of light particles, or photons — and that means it is entirely secure, as any eavesdropping would leave traces and immediately be detected.

It contains a mix of programs that just about everyone could find a use for. It isn’t just limited to the common businessperson. Any family will find some use for a mix of word processors and spreadsheet programs. The real trick is getting over the first hurdle and actually learning about what you can do with them.

If you are fairly literate with computers and just want to learn more about the office suite, then you can just take an online computer training course to learn everything that you could want to know through a simple training program. This involves a lot of things working in unison. You can learn about the programs you want through instructions and then carry out the desired action in a simulation running on the site. It’s a good mix of safe guidance and hands on exploration.

All of this should work well for your Microsoft office training needs. Just a few lessons should have you ready to go with some of the more advanced features of the program. They are also a good thing to use if you are teaching someone more about Microsoft office. These programs make really good training aids.

Tips for safe Diwali from fire and safety expert

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Following are some tips - the do’s and don’ts - for a safe Diwali from Arun Khazanchi, who is president of the Fire and Safety Association of India:

The Do’s:

- Before bursting fire crackers, look for an open space and ensure there are no combustible and inflammatory things around. If so remove them at once

- Always buy fire works from licensed and reliable sellers

- Keep small children away from the bursting area

- Use a sparkler, agarbatti (incense stick) or a long fire wood to light a cracker as they keep you at a safe distance and do not possess a naked flame

- Read the label on the crackers and follow the instructions carefully

- While igniting aerial fire works like rockets ensure that they are not facing any opening like an open window, door or an open building which may cause fire accidents

- Keep fireworks stock away while lighting a particular firework

- Wear footwear while lighting fireworks

- Keep a bucket full of water handy

- Be prepared for emergency

- Organize a community display of fireworks rather than individuals handling crackers

- Keep first aid and buckets of water handy. In the event of fire, extinguish flame by pouring water from the buckets. Every major fire is small when it starts

- Light only one firework at a time, by one person. Others should watch from a safe distance

- In case of burns, pour large quantity of water on the affected area

- In case of major burns, after extinguishing the fire, remove all smouldering clothes. Wrap the victim in a clean bed sheet

- The patient should be taken to a burns specialist or a major hospital. Don’t panic

- In case of eye burns, wash the eye with tap water for 10 minutes and take the victim to a hospital

The Don’ts:

- Do not wear nylon clothes. Prefer cottons while bursting crackers

- Strictly avoid using matches and lighters for bursting crackers as they have open flames that can be dangerous

- Never ignite aerial fireworks (like rockets) if there is any overhead obstruction present like trees and wires

- Never ever leave a lit match, agarbatti (incense stick) or sparkler near unused crackers

- Never experiment with crackers or make your own fire works

- Avoid bursting fire works on roads

- Never ever light a cracker in your hand. See to it that you put it down and ignite it

- Don’t keep your face close to the cracker while trying to light it

- Do not throw fire works at people

- Never give any firework item to small children

- Never try to burst crackers indoors or from inside a vehicle

- Do not have fire works in your pocket while igniting another

- Do not tend to burst crackers when some one else is trying to ignite one

- When crackers take time or do not ignite immediately, do not indulge in trying to burst them. Rush to a safe place immediately. Throw some water to diffuse them

- Never try to light used fireworks

- Do not ignite fireworks in any container

- Do not approach immediately the misfired fireworks

- Do not tamper with misfired fireworks

- Do not wear loose, hanging clothes. Secure all clothes properly

- Do not apply any cream or ointment or oil on burnt area

EBay to ban sale of ivory products

Friday, October 24th, 2008

EBay Inc will institute a global ban on the sale of all ivory products via its online auction site by Jan. 1, after a conservation group found over 4,000 illegal elephant ivory listings by sellers.

African and Asian elephants are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and the international Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

“We feel this is the best way to protect the endangered and protected species from which a significant portion of ivory products are derived,” eBay said on its blog on Tuesday.

EBay’s decision to institute the ban came just before the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) released findings from a three-month investigation in 11 countries.

It showed two-thirds of online commerce in illegal wildlife products were sold through sites run by San Jose, California-based eBay and its affiliates.

The investigation tracked ivory sales and other wildlife products that violate federal and international law.

It uncovered items such as stools made from elephant feet, a cheetah rug sold by a Salt Lake City eBay seller for $154.48 and ivory tusks, including a pair sold on eBay for over $21,000.

“We found over 1,000 items from endangered animals every week,” Jeff Flocken, director of the IFAW’s Washington D.C. office, said at a press conference. “It may just represent the tip of the iceberg of the trade going on on the Internet.”

Every year, more than 20,000 elephants are illegally slaughtered in Africa and Asia to meet demand for ivory products, according to IFAW, which said 73 percent of all product listings in the investigation were elephant ivory.

IFAW said eBay will ban ivory sales using filters on its site. The company has already prohibited cross-border sales of ivory and items made from other endangered or protected species, but IFAW said better enforcement was needed.

EBay already bans such items as firearms, drugs and human body parts. It has come under fire in the past for knock-off luxury items sold on its site, including designer handbags and jewelry.

The company takes down goods it recognizes as fake, but claims it cannot police its vast site without cooperation from brand owners.

EBay said it would still allow the sale of some pre-1900 items that contain a small amount of ivory, such as a table with a small ivory inlay or an antique piano with ivory keys. But items containing a significant amount of ivory, regardless of age, such as ivory chess sets, broaches and jewelry are not permitted under the new policy, eBay said.

Now a parliamentary committee to meet Millennium Development Goals

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

A parliamentary committee comprising 30 MPs was formed Wednesday to ensure that the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), which India aims to achieve along with the rest of the world, are met by 2015.

Raman Senthil, Lok Sabha MP and a core member of the committee on MDGs, said the main aim behind forming such a body was to sensitise MPs about the various problems and issues that India faces today.

“The main aim behind formation of the Parliamentary Group on the MDGs (PG-MDGs) is to sensitise the MPs about the MDGs and the issues that plague India, and indeed the rest of the world today. Only when they are aware, will the various government policies be influenced in the direction of realisation of the goals,” Senthil told IANS on the sidelines of a meet on MDGs in the capital Wednesday.

In 2000, leaders of 189 countries including India signed the Millennium Declaration, agreeing to do everything in their power to end poverty. They promised to do this by achieving the MDGs, a roadmap set by the UN to end extreme poverty by 2015.

“To begin with we are launching the committee with 30 MPs including a bright and upcoming woman MP, Supriya Sule, who is the chairperson of the group. There maybe more members in the future,” Senthil said.

Two handbooks were also released for the benefit of the MPs on this occasion.

“The handbooks give details about the eight MDGs, what our present government programmes are doing to achieve these and recommendations about what else needs to be done,” he said.

For instance, the first goal is eradication of poverty. The current policies towards this common goal include the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Policy recommendations state that NREGS should be made more mission focussed, wage payments should be made on time and transportation to the area of work and child care should be included.

To achieve the MDG of universal primary education, the policy recommendations include more public investment in education, making education a justifiable right and making it more relevant to the present times.

Besides these two, the other six MDGs are: promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment, reduction of child mortality, improvement of maternal health, combating HIV/malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and development of global partnership.
